Did you know that those with a December birthday may pick from four different birthstones? You read it right, FOUR! They are blue zircon, turquoise, blue topaz, and tanzanite. This gives those you who share a birth month with the famous, such as Queen Elizabeth, Bette Milder, and Zoe Kravitz, many options from which to choose.
Of the four birthstones, Tanzanite is my favorite. It has a rich history dating back to 1967 when it was discovered in a small mining area of Tanzania. In 2002 it became part of the December birthstones. Officially part of the zoisite family, tanzanite has a beautiful range of colors from violet blue to bluish violet to violet, which makes it a great choice for those who love a rich, dual color and a bit of sparkle! The availability in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as it's ability to pair well with any color gold, allows for unique and one-of-a-kind styles. Who doesn’t love that!!
While Tanzanite’s simple beauty goes unquestioned, this gemstone does require special care. On the MOHS scale of 10, Tanzanite has a hardness between 6-7 and thus can be more susceptible to showing wear. To clean, simply use warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush and avoid interacting with harsh chemicals.
