As Valentine's Day approaches, I remember all the excitement the day brought me as a child. I'm sure we can all remember exchaning cards with classmates by depositing them in our homemade boxes at the school party and eating lots of candy! As an adult, I wonder "where did this tradition get started?".
After a quick search, I discovered Emperor Claudis II executed two men both named Valentine on February 14th of different centuries. These men were honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of Valentine's day. Charles the Duke of Orleans penned the first recorded card to his wife on February 14th, 1415 from his prision cell in the Tower of London. This seems worlds apart from what we know of Valentine's day today!
In the United States, the first Valentine's cards were printed in the mid-1800s and often depicted cupid, the Roman god of love. The day quickly became a celebration of love, friendship, and admiration. Years later, Woolworth (for any of you who remember the department store) started selling items such as red roses, velvet covered boxes, cards, and JEWELRY!
Today, gifts range from a simple bauble all the way up to an engagement ring! What better day, than the day of love, to get engaged. Or better yet, what better way to celebrate you than buying yourself a gift. Here are a few tips....Flower are pretty, but they often wilt. Chocolate is a staple gift, but its gone all too soon. Diamonds are forever!! In addition to jewelry, many also plan to have a nice dinner, bing watch movies at home, or even exchange a handmade card!
However you celebrate this year, we hope you feel loved this Valentine's Day and remember we at The Hills Jewelry are here for all your jewelry needs!
